Neem

The neem tree (Azadirachtin indica) produces a variety of limonoids that have shown strong pesticidal properties. There are 11 commonly identified limonoids in neem that are used as reference standards.  Four of these standards are azadirachtins. Neem extracts do not directly kill the insects, but instead work as a deterrent against egg laying and feeding.

Neem also has application in traditional medicine. Although clinical evidence is lacking, there is significant traditional claim for the treatment of rheumatism using neem.

Commercial products are qualified using the neem reference standards.  A majority of products are primarily certified based on their content of Azadirachtin A and Azadirachin B. Few commercial products are certified on the broad-spectrum content of limonoids.
