Abstract
Withaferin A (CAS 5119-48-2) is a powerful steroidal lactone and one of the most abundant withanolides found in Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, commonly known as Ashwagandha or Indian ginseng.
This adaptogenic herb has played a central role in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. People have traditionally used it to increase energy, reduce stress, and promote overall wellness. Withanolides form the core group of active compounds that deliver these classic benefits.
Withaferin A stands out for its strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer activities. For example, it targets multiple pathways in cancer cells by inducing apoptosis, inhibiting cell proliferation, and disrupting key survival signals such as NF-κB and Hsp90.(1) These actions make it a valuable subject for research across various cancer types, including breast, prostate, and lung cancers. In addition, Withaferin A helps calm excessive inflammation and protects cells from oxidative damage, supporting its broad therapeutic potential.
Unlike some other withanolides that focus more on neuroprotection or mild adaptogenic effects, Withaferin A shows more potent and direct effects on cell cycle regulation and tumor suppression. It also contributes to the overall health-promoting profile of Ashwagandha extracts.
As an important marker compound, Withaferin A is critical for the standardization and quality control of Ashwagandha-based products. These products are widely used in nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, and phytopharmaceutical formulations. Precise quantification helps maintain consistent potency, batch-to-batch uniformity, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Planta Analytica provides high-purity Withaferin A reference standards. They are ideal for HPLC, UPLC, LC-MS, and other advanced analytical techniques, as well as for pharmacological studies and natural product research.
