Riddelliine N-oxide

Abstract
Riddelliine N-oxide (CAS 75056-11-0) is the oxidized form of a pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA). It occurs naturally in plants of the Senecio genus, especially Senecio riddellii. It also appears in Jacobaea vulgaris and Senecio vulgaris.
Bees can collect nectar from these plants and make honey that contains riddelliine N-oxide. For this reason, scientists now monitor pyrrolizidine alkaloid levels in honey and honey-based products.
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are natural compounds produced by certain plants. About half of these alkaloids are toxic and can cause cancer. These alkaloids poison grazing animals and livestock when they eat contaminated plants or feed. Humans then get exposed through contaminated food such as grains, honey, and milk. They can also ingest them through herbal medicines and dietary supplements.
The plants that produce riddelliine N-oxide are toxic to livestock. Farmers consider them unwanted weeds in pastures and fields.
Planta Analytica supplies high-purity riddelliine N-oxide as an analytical reference standard. This product helps laboratories accurately measure pyrrolizidine alkaloids in honey, herbal products, and animal feed.
