Epicatechin – CAS 490-46-0

Abstract

Epicatechin (CAS 490-46-0) is a catechin with (2R,3R)-configuration. The compound is a flavan-3-ol, a type of secondary metabolite providing antioxidant roles in plants. It belongs to the subgroup of polyphenols called flavonoids. Epicatechin is found in chocolate, red wine, green tea, fruits (apricots or cherry), and vegetables including broad beans. It has been suggested that the catechins in chocolate and cocoa may protect against coronary heart disease and stroke.

Catechin and epicatechin are the subunits the comprise procyanidins. The procyanidins are coarsely divided into two categories based on the inter-flavan linkage. The most abundant procyanidins are A-type, which contain 2 inter-flavan bonds between at least one set of subunits. B-type procyanidins contain only singular inter-flavan bonds between each subunit.
