Gentiopicroside
CAS: 20831-76-9
CAT: 4990
Abstract
Gentiopicroside (CAS 20831-76-9) is a naturally occurring iridoid glycoside that is isolated from Gentian root (Gentiana lutea L.). The plant has been used for preparation of many beverages, including liquors and tonics. Traditionally, Gentian root is utilized for treating flatulent colic, indigestion, earaches, heartburn, and hypothyroidism. The compounds of interest from Gentian root are the strongly bitter secoiridoids, of which gentiopicroside is the main constituent.
Gentiopicroside exerts anti-cancer effects on human colon cancer cells. This compound also has therapeutic potential for rheumatoid arthritis. It has been proven to treat dyspepsia.
In a 2007 publication, no gentiopicrin was observed in the root, possibly indicating that it forms during storage.
