Anacardic Acid C17:1

Anacardic Acid C17:1 (CAS 111047-30-4) is a mono-unsaturated phenolic lipid with a 17-carbon alkenyl chain on the salicylic acid core. It is widely known as Ginkgolic Acid C17:1 or Ginkgolic Acid II, and as 6-[(10Z)-heptadecenyl]salicylic acid or 2-hydroxy-6-[(10Z)-heptadecen-1-yl]benzoic acid.

The analog occurs in Ginkgo biloba leaf and seed material and is structurally related to the C15 anacardic acids of cashew nutshell liquid. The longer C17:1 chain shifts chromatographic retention versus C15:1, so the two compounds must be quantified separately. In ginkgo extract manufacturing, C17:1 is a primary marker for total ginkgolic acids—the alkylphenols limited by pharmacopeial monographs because of allergenic and cytotoxic concern.
