Abstract
Verbenalin (CAS 548-37-8), also known as verbenaloside, is an iridoid glycoside and one of the major bioactive constituents of Verbena officinalis L. (common vervain, Verbenaceae). Along with hastatoside and verbenin, verbenalin represents a primary iridoid component of this traditionally used medicinal herb, while verbascoside serves as the dominant phenylethanoid glycoside.
V. officinalis herbal preparations have long been employed in traditional medicine for the treatment of insomnia and various nervous conditions, as well as for their diuretic, expectorant, anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, and antitussive properties. Verbenalin contributes significantly to these effects. Preclinical studies indicate that verbenalin and hastatoside exhibit notable sleep-promoting activity, supporting the traditional application of vervain tea for sedation and nervous system support. Additional pharmacological investigations have revealed anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antiviral, and immunomodulatory potential for verbenalin, including enhancement of natural killer (NK) cell killing efficiency and possible protective effects against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.
As a hydrophilic iridoid glycoside, verbenalin serves as an important analytical marker for quality control, standardization, and phytochemical profiling of Verbena officinalis extracts and related herbal products. High-purity verbenalin reference standards facilitate accurate quantification, method validation, and research into the compound’s mechanisms of action and therapeutic applications.
Planta Analytica supplies certified high-purity verbenalin as an analytical reference material to support laboratories engaged in botanical authentication, safety assessment, and pharmacological studies worldwide.
