Verbascoside – CAS 61276-17-3

Abstract

Verbascoside (also commonly known as Acteoside) is a caffeoyl phenylethanoid glycoside from Vervain/Verbena (Verbena officinalis). Verbenalin, verbenin, and hastatoside are the major iridoid components of V. officinalis. Verbascoside and isoverbascoside are the major polyphenol components in V. officinalis. This compound is hydrophilic in nature and exhibits various therapeutic activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and wound healing effects. Verbascoside demonstrated potent anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, and prodifferentiative potential. Verbascoside (CAS 61276-17-3) has antimicrobial activity, most notably against Staphylococcus aureus. V. officinalis herbal tea is utilized for the treatment of insomnia and other nervous conditions. The iridoid components (verbanalin and hastatoside) from Verbena produced sleep-promoting activity, indicating that they are the major sleep-promoting compounds of V. officinalis.
