Procyanidin B2

CAT #: 4992

Abstract

Procyanidin B2 (CAS 29106-49-8) is a dimeric B-type proanthocyanidin which is naturally occurring in a wide range of natural products. It is commonly found in apples, cocoa, and cinnamon, among others. It is comprised of two epicatechin subunits with a bond at (4β→8).

Procyanidins, like Procyanidin B2, are polymeric chains of catechin and epicatechin subunits that contain inflavan bonds. The B-type specification for this reference standard indicated that it contains only a single interflavan bond between each subunit. Other commonly occuring B-type procyanidins include Procyanidin B1, Procyanidin C1, and Cinnamtannin A2. This is in contrast to A-type procyanidin like Procyanidin A2 or Cinnamtannin B1, which contain two interflavan bonds between at least one pair of subunits. A-type procyanidins are significantly more common.

Recent research indicates that Procyanidin B2 is a protein kinase inhibitor, promoting hair epithelial cell growth and stimulating anagen induction. Furthermore, B2 demonstrates other bioactivities and, therefore, possesses the potential to treat a wide range of diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
