8a-OH-Avermectin B1a

Abstract

8a-OH-Avermectin B1a is one of the Avermectin soil metabolites monitored by regulatory bodies. Avermectins are a group of 16-membered macrocyclic lactone derivatives with potent anthelmintic and insecticidal properties. These naturally occurring compounds are generated as fermentation products of the soil actinomycete Streptomyces avermitilis. In invertebrates, avermectins effect the nerve and muscle cells by enhancing the effects of glutamate and the glutamate-gated chloride channel. This results in an in influx of chloride ions and subsequent paralysis of the invertebrate.

Avermectins are isolated in four pairs of homologous compounds (A1, A2, B1, B2). Avermectin B1 comprises Avermectin B1a and Avermectin B2a and is marketed as abamectin. 8a-OH-Avermectin B1a is one of several soil metabolites resulting from avermectin B1a degradation. This standard, along with our other avermectin metabolite reference standards, are used to monitor fate of avermectin products in soil in the presence of microbes and exposure to sunlight.
