Carotenoids

Carotenoids are a class of yellow, orange and red organic pigments produced by plant, algae, bacteria, and certain fungi. These compounds are associated with the characteristic colors of products such as corn, tomatoes salmon, carrots, and goji berries among others. They are derivatives of tetraterpenes, containing 8 isoprene unites and 40 carbon atoms. Browse our catalog for our collection of high-quality carotenoid reference standards.

Carotenoids help plants absorb light energy for photosynthesis as well as providing photoprotection. In human studies, the compounds have been found with reduction of head and neck cancers, as well as prostate cancer. They have also been monitored for the concentration in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, and their neuroprotective properties.
