Zeaxanthin

Abstract

Zeaxanthin (CAS 144-68-3) is one of the most common carotenoids and is most commonly isolated from goji berries. Xanthophylls such as zeaxanthin act to modulate light energy and deal with overproduced chlorophyll at high light levels during photosynthesis. Several studies have provided preliminary evidence correlating increased levels of dietary intake of foods containing lutein and zeaxanthin with decreased levels of age-related diseases of the eyes such as cataracts and eye strain.  Studies have recently show how increased xanthophyll levels protect the kidney from disease while decreased levels of xanthophylls are present in Alzheimer’s disease patients compared to a healthy brain.
