Abstract
Zeaxanthin (CAS 144-68-3), also known as anchovyxanthin or xanthophyll 3, is a naturally occurring xanthophyll carotenoid found in various plants, paprika, corn, and green leafy vegetables. It is one of the two primary macular pigments (along with lutein) that accumulate in the human retina.
This bioactive carotenoid has been extensively studied for its potent antioxidant properties. Preclinical studies demonstrate that zeaxanthin effectively scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduces lipid peroxidation in retinal cells, showing superior singlet oxygen quenching capacity compared to many other carotenoids due to its 11 conjugated double bonds. It serves as a key marker compound for the standardization and quality control of carotenoid-rich botanical extracts, dietary supplements, and food products.
