Sennoside B – CAS 128-57-4

Abstract

Sennoside B (CAS 128-57-4) is isolated from Senna (Cassia species), a popular herbal laxative that is available without a prescription. Studies have shown senna stimulates the colon to induce contractions and decrease water absorption, these effects would provide relief from constipation. Sennosides have been reviewed for treatment of constipation in children and the elderly alone or in combination with sorbitol or lactulose. Sennoside B has many bioactive components and the product is usually safe and well tolerated, but can lead to adverse events including clinically apparent liver injury when used in high doses beyond the recommended period.
