Ruscin – CAS 39491-41-3

Abstract

Ruscin (CAS 39491-41-3) is a is a steroidal saponin that is isolated from Butcher’s Broom (Ruscus aculeatus). Butcher’s broom is commonly known and has been used by a variety of peoples as a treatment for a variety of ailments. In Europe, it was claimed that the rhizomes could be used as a laxative or diuretic while, in ancient Greece, butcher’s broom was believed to remove kidney stones when added to wine. Ruscin has multiple bioactivities and possesses a variety of pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory properties, platelet aggregation inhibition, pulmonary hypertension lowering properties, acute lung injury alleviation and other effects.
