Abstract

Arachistannin A is an A-type trimeric procyanidin isolated from peanut skins. Procyanidins are proanthocyanidins formed from (+) catechin and (-) epicatechin. Procyanidins can be categorized into A-type and B-type, depending on the nature of the interflavan bonds. B-type procyanidins have a single interflavan bond. A-type procyanidins have not only one interflavan bond, but also a second interflavanoid bond. Research suggests peanut skins procyanidins bioactive properties showed no significant difference to grape seeds. Peanut skin procyanidins are now being considered as an abundant and cheap source of procyanidins compared to other sources. Research is being done on Arachistannin A’s cell antioxidant activity.
